"When I heard that the book was being adapted into a film, I was immediately excited and pushed to compose the score," recalls Hennig Fuchs. As a teenager, he had already connected with the worlds of Hermann Hesse, including the story of Narziss and Goldmund, which explores contrasts and the search for perfection. Fuchs’ journey reflects this pursuit of excellence: starting as a bandleader, singer, and songwriter at 14, studying at Sir Paul McCartney's Institute, and later training as a composer in Liverpool. Afterward, he moved to Berlin, touring with his band Sabanova, and earned a degree in Film Composition from Potsdam-Babelsberg University. He also worked alongside composer Max Richter for four years, contributing to films like "Everything Will Be Fine" and "Human Flow." For the film "Narziss and Goldmund," directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, Fuchs was given free rein to create a soundtrack that mirrors the story’s themes of opposites and self-discovery. The score blends dreamy sounds, medieval chants, and the unique tone of the Handpan (Hang), an instrument chosen for its meditative qualities. The soundtrack, which captures the extremes of life depicted in Hesse's narrative—from suffering to happiness—features 39 tracks, illustrating that perfection emerges from many distinct components, each meaningful in itself. Fuchs reflects on the intense six-week process leading to the soundtrack's creation with satisfaction, evident in the emotional depth of the music.
